Frequently Asked Questions
Are my speakers worth repairing?
Some speakers are always worth repairing, such as JBL, AR, Bose, Dalquist. Others are definitely worth repairing assuming that everything else works and the speaker is in good condition. You should check your tweeters, and midranges before you think about refoaming the woofers. Then there are other factors such as sentimental value, what would new speakers cost, and then finally....the sound! New speakers just don't have the same sound as some of the old vintage/classic speakers,

Is the repair job difficult?
It's just like the first time you changed your oil or tuned up your car. You didn't know how until someone showed you or you read the directions. Speaker repair is the same; its not a difficult job once you've seen it done on the 24 minute instructional video. Printed instructions are also included.

How much time will the repair take?
This varies with the individual, but generally 30 to 60 minutes per speaker. Some may feel comfortable with their new skill and some may proceed cautiously. Some speakers clean up easily and some are a bear to clean.

How long will new foam surrounds last?
How long the new foam surrounds will last depends on many factors, such as, humidity, temperature, sunlight, etc... The foam being manufactured now is polyether and is expected to last longer. You could assume that if the speakers are in the same environment, that they will last at least as long as your original foams lasted. Generally the foam surrounds will last 12 - 20 years.

I only have one speaker that needs repaired; can I buy only one surround?
If one of your surrounds has cracked or split from age...then the other one is close behind. You should always repair the woofers in pairs. However if you need only one to repair a subwoofer, please contact us for special pricing.

What are dust caps?
The dust caps is the dome in the center of the speaker. The dust cap protects the voice coil from dust and debris.

My dust caps are fine; do I still need to replace them?
The reason for replacing the dust caps is that they are cut out during the repair process. See next question.

Other kit suppliers say that you don't need to cut out the dust cap to replace the surrounds. Why do you say it is necessary?
The purpose for cutting out the dust cap is to shim the voice coil and ensure it is centered. This is the method used by all the professionals. A voice coil that is not centered can rub either the center pole or the magnet. This not only sounds bad, but it will eventually lead to breaking of the wires in the voice coil...and the result is NO SOUND. It's a very simple step, and there is no good reason to skip it other than you want to increase your profit margin by not including dust caps.

When I measure my dust cap, should I include the flat lip?
Yes, The dust cap diameter should include the edge that is glued to the cone.

The foam surrounds included seem to be a bid large for the outer metal frame; can they be trimmed?
Yes, trimming the outside is acceptable. The inside fit is by far the most important. If you have problems with the fit of the surround to the cone, please contact us to get foam that fits properly.

The kit I ordered for my speaker does not fit my woofers. What's the problem?
Speaker manufactures at times, changed woofers (from a difference suppliers or their own engineering change) in the middle of a speaker run. Then there is always the series I, series II problem. This is why we supply the cone diameter size in the description of our kits. Even though your speaker is listed, you should still measure your cones to ensure the correct fit. If and when this happens, we will send you the correct surrounds.

The dust caps you sent are larger that the caps on my woofers.
Dust cap sizes from suppliers are limited. We include the closest size we can. But if it's not a perfect match, it has to be larger to cover the old one.

I can't find the correct foam for my speakers anywhere, where can I find them?
Foam surrounds are subject to the laws of supply and demand. If you have a rare or odd speaker size, it may not be profitable for manufactures and suppliers to produce that surround. Surrounds for some speakers, especially some Europian speakers, just are not available. There are lots of speaker repair firms out there. Make sure you try them all...you might still find the size you need.
